8,000 teachers in Tamil Nadu go without salary

More than 8,000 teachers
, who were receiving salaries through the
Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan
(RMSA) scheme, have complained that they are yet to receive their salary due to delay in passing the pay authorisation order by school education department.

Under the RMSA scheme, the school education department has additionally created 1,590 post-graduate teacher posts and 6,752 BT assistant (graduate teachers) posts in government higher secondary schools.

They used to receive their salary based on extension of posts given by the school education department from time to time.

Following the expiry of the one year period in December 2018, the school education director sought an extension for three years from January 2019.

Pending the proposal, they were given three months extension until March. “The authorities could have passed the pay authorisation letter in April, so that we could have received our salary on time. But, they passed the order only on Thursday, forcing us to struggle without salary for two weeks. We may not receive our salary for another week due to procedures,” said Rajkumar, a teacher employed in a government school.

“Though we were appointed on a regular scale, we have to wait for our salary every time the extension lapses. The government should take care and issue the extension before the month ends,” he urged.
Another teacher said that though the budget allocation was done until October this year, the department is giving the extension month by month.

Tamil Nadu Teachers Association president P K Ilamaran urged the state government to convert the temporary posts to permanent ones so that the teachers may receive their salary regularly.

“The government should give at least yearly extension to avoid the unnecessary burden on teachers,” he said.

When enquired, officials from the school education department said the department wanted to give extension for three years. “The proposal is pending with the finance department. Once it is cleared, we are hopeful of giving salary to the teachers on time,” they said.

However, teachers said the pay authorisation order for the month of May should be given before the month ends so that they can receive their salary on time.
